How will we power the Data Centers?
If you've been watching the news lately around data centers and artificial intelligence (AI) you will have seen stories about the potential exponential rise in power demand that may result for predicted growth in AI and other computing needs. Stories are suggesting that AI may cause some U.S. utilities to increase their annual generation by more than a quarter over the next three years. This increase in demand is occurring at the same time we are seeing additional loads on the grid from new manufacturing in the U.S., electric vehicle charging, and electrification of our buildings.
This is a real issue, but in some ways it is a good problem to have. All of these increased power demands reflect the fact that the economy remains strong and projections are good for continued growth. Additionally, electrification and growth in the power grid means we need thousands of people to fill the new jobs that will come from meeting these needs.
